Abstract
BIG DATA FOR ENHANCING MOUNTAIN TOURISM: EXPERIENCES AND POTENTIAL.
The widespread adoption of new communication technologies, the pervasiveness of mobile services and usage, along with the near-total signal coverage available to almost the entire population across virtually all territories, made mobile networks a valuable and immense source of georeferenced data in both time and space domains. Mobile-network Big Data now represents an innovative and well-explored tool for studying population presence and mobility dynamics across any geographic or temporal scale, fully complying with GDPR privacy requirements. In this article, we focus specifically on tourism and present two case studies within mountain areas: (i) certain points of interest within the UNESCO Dolomites site, including Lago di Braies, Lago di Tovel, and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo; and (ii) the national parks, Gran Paradiso National Park and Abruzzo National Park.
Keywords: big data, GDPR, UNESCO Dolomites, National Parks
